Arm and Thigh Lift Surgery

Body lift surgery has evolved significantly over the past several decades and is designed to improve contour, firmness, and proportion in areas affected by skin laxity. Arm lifts and thigh lifts specifically address excess skin and tissue that can result from weight loss, aging, or genetic predisposition.

Unlike liposuction, which removes excess fat, body lift procedures focus primarily on removing loose, hanging skin and tightening the underlying structures to restore a smoother, more youthful contour.

An arm lift, medically referred to as brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure that reshapes the upper arms by removing excess skin and fat between the underarm and the elbow. This procedure is commonly sought by patients who experience sagging “bat wing” arms that do not improve with exercise.

While liposuction may be used in conjunction with an arm lift to address localized fat deposits, liposuction alone cannot correct significant skin laxity. An arm lift provides a more definitive solution by tightening and reshaping the arm contour.

The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and may take between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the extent of correction required. Incisions are carefully placed along the inner or back portion of the arm so they are as discreet as possible when the arms are at rest.

Thigh lift surgery is designed to reshape the thighs by reducing excess skin and fat, resulting in smoother skin and better-proportioned contours of the legs. This procedure is particularly beneficial for patients who experience loose skin along the inner or outer thighs, often following significant weight loss.

There are several types of thigh lifts, including inner thigh lifts, outer thigh lifts, and circumferential thigh lifts, depending on the location and severity of skin laxity. In many cases, liposuction is used as an adjunct to remove excess fat before tightening the skin.

Thigh lift surgery is generally performed under general anesthesia and may take 2 to 3 hours or longer, depending on the complexity of the procedure and whether it is combined with other body contouring surgeries.

Body Lift Procedure & Anesthesia

Arm and thigh lift procedures are most commonly performed under general anesthesia, although limited procedures may occasionally be performed with sedation. Incisions are planned meticulously during the pre-operative consultation to maximize contour improvement while minimizing visible scarring.

Excess skin and tissue are removed, and the remaining skin is tightened and secured to create a firmer, more youthful appearance. Drains may be placed temporarily to reduce fluid accumulation and support proper healing.

Recovery After Arm and Thigh Lift Surgery

Recovery following body lift surgery varies based on the extent of surgery performed. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are expected during the first 1–2 weeks and are typically well controlled with prescribed pain medication.

Compression garments are required after surgery to minimize swelling, support healing, and help the skin conform to its new shape. These garments are usually worn for 4 to 6 weeks, depending on your surgeon’s recommendations.

Most patients are encouraged to walk the same day of surgery, but strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for several weeks. Return to work is often possible within 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the physical demands of the job.

Body Lift Results

Results from arm and thigh lift surgery are often dramatic and highly satisfying. Patients typically notice a significant improvement in contour once swelling begins to subside, usually within the first 4–6 weeks.

While early results are visible relatively quickly, the final outcome may take up to 6 months as swelling resolves and scars continue to mature. Scars will fade gradually over time and are placed in locations intended to be concealed by clothing whenever possible.

Candidates for Arm & Thigh Lift Surgery

Ideal candidates for body lift surgery are individuals who:

  • Are at or near a stable, healthy weight

  • Have excess, sagging skin of the arms or thighs
  • Are in good overall health
  • Do not smoke or are willing to stop smoking before surgery

Body lift surgery is not intended as a weight loss procedure. Maintaining a stable weight before and after surgery is critical to preserving long-term results.

Risks and Safety

Arm and thigh lift surgery are considered safe when performed by an American Board of Plastic Surgery–certified plastic surgeon. As with any surgical procedure, there are risks, including infection, delayed wound healing, scarring, asymmetry, and fluid accumulation.

The most common concern following body lift procedures is scarring. While scars are permanent, they typically fade significantly over time and are outweighed by the improvement in contour and comfort for most patients.

Preparation for arm or thigh lift surgery includes smoking cessation, maintaining a healthy diet, and following all pre-operative instructions provided by your surgeon. Medical clearance or blood work may be required prior to surgery.

During your consultation, a comprehensive discussion of goals, expectations, incision placement, recovery timeline, and potential risks will take place to ensure you are fully informed.

Your Body Lift Consultation: What to Discuss

Open communication with your plastic surgeon is essential. Important questions to ask include:

Am I a good candidate for an arm or thigh lift?

Will liposuction be used in combination with the procedure?

What will the scarring look like?
